Special Service Award (Silver)

On Sunday, January 7, 2024, at around 11:00 a.m., Caltrans Maintenance Leadworker Isai Camino and Highway Maintenance Worker John Bedolla were traveling south on Interstate 15 to perform routine maintenance on the toll lanes. While en route, they noticed an overturned vehicle on the northbound side of the freeway. Without hesitation, they took the next exit and made their way to the scene to investigate. Upon arrival, they were met with the sounds of panic—cries and shouts coming from inside the wreckage. A woman and her young son were trapped inside the overturned vehicle. Mr. Camino and Mr. Bedolla immediately sprang into action. Mr. Bedolla carefully helped the woman escape through the front windshield, ensuring she remained calm and safe throughout the rescue. At the same time, Mr. Camino climbed onto the side of the wreck and quickly worked to pry open the rear door. He gently helped the frightened young boy out of the vehicle, offering words of reassurance as he led him to safety. Emergency responders arrived within minutes, and thankfully, no one sustained serious injuries. Mr. Camino’s and Mr. Bedolla’s courageous actions to rescue and comfort the mother and child exceeded all expectations. Their selfless bravery in a moment of crisis exemplified true heroism. The State of California takes great pride in presenting the Silver Medal of Valor to California Department of Transportation, Caltrans Highway Maintenance Leadworker Isai Camino, and Highway Maintenance Worker John Bedolla, for their heroic service extending above and beyond the normal call of duty.
