On December 22, 1964, during the height of the Northern California December 1964 floods, Fish and Game Warden Herbert D. Christie took his small boat time and again to rescue – two people at a time - 15 people and three dogs from the raging flood waters. The Eel River was 20 feet above flood stage and the wind velocity was estimated at 30 knots.
