On August 25, 1962, Fort Ross Ranger William Bishop and Curator John McKenzie and another rescuer launched a 16 foot outboard boat in the heavy seas to rescue crew members of the sailing yacht “Holiday” when a huge wave swept the sailing vessel. The boat’s engine was disabled, the vessel was taking on water and one crewman was washed overboard. With their radio gone, the three remaining members built a fire on the deck. Ranger Bishop, Curator McKenzie and the other rescuer launched the outboard boat and pulled the 80 foot yacht to deep water despite the imminent danger of breaking up on the rocky coast. All but the crewman swept to sea were saved.
