Working together during the major 1964 December floods, Harold A. Carling and Charles L. Monroe lashed together three small boats to cross and re-cross the Eel River at Ferndale to rescue several stranded people. Huge logs, trees, entire houses and other debris constantly threatened the barely maneuverable boat.
