William L. David Jr. abandoned a lumber-carrier in the swirling Klamath River and fought his way through the water and debris to rescue a family of three. Later that same night, he again waded through should-deep churning water to direct the rescue of 20 men, woman and children before the flood demolished the house they were trapped in.
