Highway Patrolman Michael D. Dunlap climbed atop a burning vehicle to extricate five passengers from another blazing car welded into a fiery, six vehicle smash-up. With gas tanks and tires exploding around him, Officer Dunlap tried to force the twisted door, but it wouldn't open. The officer then pulled the five trapped passengers out through a window. Eight people were injured in the six car crash. Two died of burns. Officer Dunlap’s face, right hand and forearm were seriously burned during the dangerous rescue.
