Shortly after midnight, Officer Victor L. Sands quietly entered the home of a man who was shooting at local sheriff deputies and neighbors. After removing his shoes, Officer Sands entered the rear of the home and while the man was shooting at deputies, struck him across the back of the head with the stock of a shotgun whole simultaneously colliding with him. The man had fired 34 shots from a rifle during the evening
