At approximately 4:00 pm, a car traveling northbound was cut off by another car, forcing the driver to swerve into northbound traffic. That car collided head-on with a small sports car. At the same time, another car was struck from the rear, which in turn was hit by another vehicle. The driver of the sports car managed to escape when it burst into flames, but the 19 year old female passenger was trapped inside. Edwin Hargrove was driving north in the vicinity of the accident site, approaching the Golden Gate Toll Plaza, when he heard the collision and saw the fire and smoke. The young woman was screaming for help. He ran to the burning sports car and pulled the victim out with the aid of another driver. In the process Mr. Hargrove’s hair was singed. Both the driver and the female passenger suffered from a broken leg, cuts and scrapes. Mr. Hargrove’s deed was especially laudable because he had a heart condition.
