On January 6, 2008, at approximately 3:15 p.m., a woman and her 84-year old father were walking her pet Terrier and Chihuahua-mix dog, in their Citrus Heights neighborhood west of Birdcage Center. Suddenly, and without warning, a large aggressive dog attacked her small dog. When the woman tried to protect her dog, the aggressive dog knocked her to the ground and savagely bit her hands and arms.
Jeff Madeira, a Data Processing Manager at the Franchise Tax Board, saw the attack and got out of his car to help. He fought with the aggressive dog and managed to scare it away. He helped the bleeding woman, her father, and her wounded dog into his car and quickly drove them to their nearby home. Once there, the woman’s husband immediately drove his wife to the hospital for medical treatment and the dog to a veterinary clinic. The woman sustained severe injuries and, even today, continues to suffer pain and numbness in her hands. Sadly, her dog died from his injuries a few hours after the vicious attack.
In their haste to get medical attention, they failed to get Mr. Madeira’s name. Following the incident, the family broadcast appeals over local newscasts and printed media, asking the “Good Samaritan” to come forward so that they could thank him in person. Jeff heard the appeals and met the family a week after the incident.
