On April 18, 1991, Officer Rolf Trondsen, while off duty and unarmed in a park in Salinas, saw a robbery suspect run into the park in an attempt to escape from a citizen in pursuit. Officer Trondsen sent a bystander to place a 911 call to the Salinas Police Department then kept the suspect under observation in order to safeguard the 100-200 children and adults in the park. When the suspect reacted to the sound of approaching sirens by wielding a tire iron in a threatening fashion, Officer Trondsen moved to disarm and disable him, then kept him subdued until Salinas police officer arrived and took him into custody.
