On August 19, 2010, at approximately 7:45 a.m., Oakland Call Center Manager Carrie Stanton was walking through the parking lot to her job at the Department of Motor Vehicle’s Oakland Coliseum Field Office and Call Center, when she heard screams coming from behind her. She turned and saw one of her female employees being assaulted by a man. Ms. Stanton immediately dropped everything she was holding and ran to her employee’s aid. Positioning herself between the assailant and the employee, she screamed at him to leave her employee alone, but the assailant pushed Ms. Stanton aside and attacked the employee again, this time flinging her to the ground. The assailant then jumped into his truck and started backing out of the parking space. Ms. Stanton and her employee were directly behind the truck and the employee was still on the ground. Ms. Stanton hurriedly pulled her employee up and pushed her out of the way as the assailant attempted to run them over. The assailant put the vehicle in drive and again Ms. Stanton had to push her employee out of the vehicle’s way as he attempted to hit her while exiting the parking lot. After the assailant left, Ms. Stanton drove the victim to the hospital and stayed with her. They both returned to work after the employee received medical treatment.
