On February 1, 2015, at 10:26 a.m., Correctional Officer Mike Johnson was on his way home from work when he came across a two-car crash that left one vehicle on fire. Officer Johnson and a Marina police officer rescued a woman from the burning vehicle by carrying her to safety just before the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames. Officer Johnson also moved another victim, who was on the ground nearby, to safety.
Both victims survived and are recovering. Officer Johnson suffered burns but did not seek medical attention. The Marina Police Department stated Officer Johnson “really did an outstanding job. [His] actions were commendable and did not go unnoticed.”
The victims’ family was left financially strapped to pay for medical bills. Officer Johnson is helping the victims’ family raise money for their medical care.
