Special Service Award (Silver)
On August 8, 2018, Department of General Services Custodian Fannie Lyn Rodriguez was walking to the State Capitol building for an evening shift when she witnessed a homeless man in a wheelchair stab another man at 11th and O Streets.
Ms. Rodriguez, who is a licensed Certified Nursing Assistant, was one of several DGS employees at the scene. She rushed into action to help the victim, removing her work shirt and wrapping it around the victim's arm to staunch the bleeding until paramedics could arrive. Because the assailant had fled the scene after stabbing the victim and had not yet been captured by law enforcement, Ms. Rodriguez placed herself at risk by stopping to aid the victim.
With no regard for her own safety, Ms. Rodriguez went above and beyond the call of duty. The State of California takes great pride in presenting this Silver Medal of Valor to Department of General Services Custodian Fannie Lyn T. Rodriguez.
