On the morning of September 15, 2021, a Department of Industrial Relations employee gasped out and collapsed in the middle of her office space. The victim’s colleagues leapt into action. Senior Legal Typist Karla Castro began chest compressions and administering CPR. Senior Legal Typist Cristi Valencia then took over to administer chest compressions and CPR. Following Ms. Valencia, Senior Legal Typist Camille Morgan took a turn to administer chest compressions and CPR. Additional staff comforted the employee, called the police, and retrieved the AED machine. As paramedics arrived, and after forty harrowing minutes of attempting to rescue the employee, the employee passed away. With no regard for her own safety, Senior Legal Typist Valencia went above and beyond the call of duty. The State of California takes great pride in presenting the Silver Medal of Valor to Department of Industrial Relations Senior Legal Typist Cristi Valencia.
