On October 28, 1957, Officer Edward Fitzgerald of the Harbor Police Force of the San Francisco Port Authority single-handedly captured a bank bandit who robbed a branch of the Crocker-Anglo National Bank of San Francisco and stole $1700. Officer Fitzgerald was driving a patrol car on official business when at the corner of First and Mission Street he was hailed by a passerby in a taxicab. The passerby requested Officer Fitzgerald apprehend a suspected bank robber who had commandeered another taxicab and was making his escape. Officer Fitzgerald approached, captured, and searched the suspected bank robber at gunpoint and then turned him over to the San Francisco police. In the bandit's possession was the stolen $1,700.
